Insect behavior summer research internship at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Oklahoma - Behavioral ecology and conservation biology of the endangered American burying beetle.
Seeking applicants for summer 2010 research internships at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve (TGPP) in Oklahoma. Participate in a field study focused upon the disturbance ecology and foraging behavior of the endangered American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus).

Daily field work involves hiking to predetermined transect sites using a GPS and topographical maps, setting and maintaining pitfall traps, documenting trap captures, site characterization (soil, botanical assemblage, meteorological data) and maintaining a detailed field notebook. The opportunity also exists to participate in breeding and bioacoustics experiments with the species, to develop and/or refine skills in GIS analysis, and to participate in the development of a TGPP land cover map using satellite imagery. Successful applicants must: enjoy early morning work, be able to work with very ripe carrion, handle live animals with great care, be computer proficient, and pay careful attention to detailed data entry. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a true field research experience in the largest tract of Tallgrass prairie ecosystem remaining in North America. No pay, but a great field experience at a phenomenal field site. Room, board and station fees covered. A small stipend to cover travel costs will also be offered.

Project date: approximately 01 July - 01 August 2010. Application deadline March 1, 2010.
