Available Field Research Assistant Graduate of UIUC '08 in Integrative Biology
Research Opportunities Posted by Jessica De Smet on 2009 April 28 (Tuesday) : 09:27 PM
from the unemployed and desperate graduate who wants to keep learning so her brain won't atrophy dept.
I am a graduate of UIUC May 2008 in Integrative Biology looking for an internship for this coming Summer or Fall. I already have extensive field and laboratory experience. I have open availability and am looking for an internship that lasts anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months or more that provides housing and a small stipend. I am flexible and eager to jump into the field of Animal Behavior.
Currently I am looking to expand my experience before pursuing an academic commitment and to help discern which biological field interests me most. Animal Behavior has always interested me, and, in conjunction with my wanting to help the world on a grander scale, I would love to do something that coincides with tropical conservation ecology.
Preference for me goes towards entomological or ornithological studies, the prior because I already have experience with insects and adore them, and the former because I do not have much experience with birds outside of the classroom and would love to learn more about them.
My experience includes both laboratory and field training:
I have extensive lab experience in plant DNA purification, sequencing reactions, PCR analysis, re-PCR, running gels, etc. in order to help clarify taxanomic data for the plant family Apiaceae and genus Acacia.
I also have extensive entomology experience from coursework and personal interest. I maintain a growing insect collection and have studied leafcutter ant behavior in a laboratory setting.
My field experience is in studying population ecology of the black-tailed prairie dog in South Dakota and Wyoming. My background with this includes early morning starts, extensive use of GPS systems, transecting prairie dog colonies following topographical maps, dealing with carrion, flea collecting, wild animal handling and processing, and data entry using excel and other formats.
I have paleontological experience doing a cave dig with Penn State in South Dakota. Screenwashing, digging, bagging, tagging, and bone sorting. I will be back in the Black Hills this coming July to volunteer for them again this year.
Like I said before, I am extremely flexible and it is more than likely your study will interest me.
For more information please contact me at jdesmet2@gmail.com and I will be more than happy to supply you with a full resume, unofficial transcripts, and reference list. If you have an interesting position for me I will be more than willing to apply formally with a cover letter expressing my interests and goals.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!:)
