Research Opportunities Posted by Steven Wilkening on 2009 April 28 (Tuesday) : 04:12 PM
from the dept.
Looking for assistants to help with research in forest-edge habitats of central Panama this Summer 2009. Current projects relate neuroanatomy to the wild courtship displays of the manakins and also examine the hormonal basis of the acrobatic courtship displays of the golden-collared manakin (Manacus vitellinus).
The lab of Dr. Lainy Day is seeking assistants to help with a study of comparative neuroanatomy of birds, manakins (Pipridae), with complex physical courtship displays and additional studies of the effects of hormones on the display of the golden-collared manakin (Manacus vitellinus). These projects are being conducted through the University of Mississippi and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the latter of which has facilities in Gamboa, Panama in the Canal Zone, where we will be working. Work will include long hours, beginning before dawn, of mist-netting birds in edge-habitat of the forest. Assistance with the processing of brain and muscle tissue may also be needed. Other duties may include caring for captive birds and video-recording their behavior.Assistance is needed between June 15, 2009 and August 25, 2009. Being able to help for most of the duration is preferred, but dates can be flexible if necessary.Assistants must pay their own transportation costs to and from Gamboa. However, room and board will be provided. Housing is in non-air conditioned but modern facilities with access to shared computer terminals with internet in an air conditioned room. Qualifications/Experience: Previous experience working outdoors is highly recommended. Previous mist-netting experience as well as experience living or working in the tropics is preferred but not required. Proficiency in Spanish is also useful. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license from their country of origin and be able to operate manual transmission. Applicants must be willing to work in hot, humid, and insect heavy areas. Interested parties can contact Steven Wilkening at srwilken@olemiss.edu. Please send a statement of relevant experience and interest, CV, and contact information of two references.
