from the dept. Looking for valuable fieldwork experience before applying to graduate school? A chance to become personally acquainted with some of the most fascinating primates on earth? The Lomas Barbudal Monkey Project is looking for research assistants. Field assistant positions available for a long-term study of social behavior and life history strategies in wild white-faced capuchin monkeys, Cebus capucinus, at Lomas Barbudal, Costa Rica. This project, founded 19 years ago, has one of the most detailed data sets on the social interactions and individual life histories for any wild primate. Parentage is known for all individuals, and the extensive background information for each individual makes the data collection more interesting. The primary research focus this year is migration, infanticide risk, and ways of coping with stress. Duties include collection of behavioral data (focal follows and group scans, and participation in field experiments), collection and processing of fecal samples for genetic and hormonal analysis, and participation in the camp chore rotations. Room and board is covered by the project, and plane fare up to $1000 is covered for those people who fulfill their one-year commitments. Spanish skills and prior experience are desirable but not absolutely necessary if the applicant is able to demonstrate a genuine interest in the subject matter and other talents that would be useful to the project. Applicants should have the sense of personal responsibility and emotional fortitude to stay the agreed-upon length of time even if they decide that doing research is not as fun as they expected it to be. Commitment is essential to long-term field projects! Instructions on the application procedure, as well as information about the project are available at:http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/anthro/faculty/sperry/jobs.htmlThis site has a 26-page document describing the pros and cons of working at the field site which should be read before applying. Further detail on the research program, the daily routine, and these amazing animals are available in the popular science book “Manipulative Monkeys: The Capuchins of Lomas Barbudal” (http://www.amazon.com/Manipulative-Monkeys-Capuchins-Lomas-Barbudal/dp/0674026640).Six internships per year are awarded, with varying start dates, and rolling application deadlines. Be sure to include in your application letter the dates when you would be available. < | >
