Summer Internship Available in Sidney Montana
Jobs Posted by Robert Srygley on 2008 February 19 (Tuesday) : 05:53 PM
from the dept.
We seek an intern to work with the effect of cannibalism by Mormon crickets on the insect’s immunity to disease.

In choice tests, migrating Mormon crickets seek protein over carbohydrates, indicating a deficiency in protein that cannibalism may alleviate. However cannibalism may come at a cost due to the insect’s need to defend itself against the potential introduction of foreign pathogens in the cannibalized carcass. The intern will work closely with the Mentoring Scientist and his Biological Technician. S/he will help in field work to collect Mormon crickets in western Montana, and will learn to maintain healthy Mormon cricket stocks in the laboratory. S/he will learn to measure insect immunity to disease with biochemical assays of the hemolymph and quantification of visible responses by the immune system, such as rod encapsulation and circulating hemocytes. S/he will be expected to present a short seminar of 15-30 min at the end of the tenure.

There are no requirements other than an interest in agricultural or biological science, US citizenship or permanent residency, enrollment in college in the fall of 2008, and completion of 30 semester credit hours with 6 in science or math. The position is based in the Pest Management Research Unit at the Northern Plains Agricultural Research Lab located in the Yellowstone River valley in eastern Montana. The internship will begin on or near June 1, 2008 depending on the student’s schedule. The pay is $11.34 per hour (GS-3) or $3628.80 for 8 weeks. An extension may also be arranged. Please see the attached file for a complete description.

The USDA is an equal opportunity employer; we encourage underrepresented persons in Ag Sciences to apply.
