the Maui Bird Conservation Center, Hawaii

AVICULTURE INTERNS wanted for the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation
Program at the Maui Bird Conservation Center (MBCC) on the island of
Maui. Managed by the Zoological Society of San Diego, the programs
goals are to produce captive-reared endangered Hawaiian birds for
release into the wild population. At MBCC we house and breed four
species of endangered Hawaiian birds- the 'Alala, Nene, Maui
Parrotbill, and the Puaiohi.

The Maui Bird Conservation Center is looking to fill various intern
positions immediately.

Intern daily tasks include husbandry duties such as: diet
preparation, aviary and facility maintenance, behavioral observations
of breeding birds, grounds keeping, predator control.

Applicant must be able to live with several housemates in a remote
area and should show enthusiasm for work with captive endangered
birds. Applicant must have a valid driver's license and health
insurance. Internships last for a 3-6 month period. Interns receive
free housing and a daily stipend.

For more information on internships at MBCC, please send this

Looking for a position as a field assistant

I will be graduating from college with a BA in biology this spring.
Before continuing on to graduate school for animal behavior or for
veterinarian medicine, I will be spending the next year (Oct 2008-May
2009) working and traveling throughout Africa and Southeast Asia. I am
looking for work in any country in these areas. I will provide my own
travel expenses/visas etc., preferable accommodation would be provided for
my work. I do have experience working with wildlife, please ask for
resume. If you have an questions please contact me via e-mail,

Subject: COMMERCIAL-Noldus Catalog of Software/Hardware Solutions

Noldus Information Technology has published its first catalog of
solutions for animal behavior research. This 118-page full-color book
presents an overview of software and hardware products and integrated
solutions, as well as examples of applications for which they can be put
to use. The catalog describes solutions for research on small lab
animals, wildlife and zoo animals, farm animals, fish, insects, and
companion animals. To receive your free copy, fill out the form on

Subject: Canine Science Forum 2008

Dear Colleagues,
The Department of Ethology, Eötvös Loránd University and Department of
Neurobiology and Cognition Research, University of Vienna are
organizing the first Canine Science Forum conference which will
be held in Budapest, between 5-9 July, 2008. The website of conference
is available at http://csf2008.elte.hu

We strongly feel that there is a need for an interdisciplinary forum
that brings together scientists with different expertise on Canines
who wish to share their research interests with fellow colleagues
working on closely or more distantly related fields. This forum aims
to substantiate canine biology in order to develop it as a major model
of biological investigations.

The main aim of Canine Science Forum is to utilize science as a source
of knowledge to promote…
    * the emergence of an interdisciplinary field of canine biology
    * better integration of dogs in our rapidly changing modern society
    * the advantageous roles of dogs in our society and thus increase
their well-being
    * dog science that develops non-invasive research technologies
(Good Scientific Practice)

Subject: CHCI accepting applications for appaarentice program

Dr. Mary Lee Jensvold wrote:

The Chimpanzee & Human Communication Institute (CHCI) is currently taking
applications for our 10-week Summer Apprentice Program. Graduates,
undergraduates, and post-graduates from various academic backgrounds (e.g.
Anthropology, Biology, Psychology, Linguistics, Philosophy, etc.) and all
nationalities are encouraged to apply. The dates of the program are June
15 to August 22, 2008.

The research at CHCI involves a group of chimpanzees who use the signs of
American Sign Language (ASL). Washoe, Moja, Tatu, and Dar were part of the
cross- fostering research that began in 1966 with Drs. R.A. & B.T.
Gardner. Each chimpanzee was raised in an enriched environment in which
his or her human family members used only ASL, much like the environment
in which a deaf human child grows up. Loulis was adopted by Washoe in 1978
and learned his signs from chimpanzees. Currently, Tatu, Dar, and Loulis
reside at CHCI on the campus of Central Washington University in
Ellensburg, WA in a large state-of-the-art facility.

Apprentices are at the institute daily -- cleaning enclosures, preparing
meals and enrichment, making observations of the chimpanzees, and
participating in one or more research projects. The first week is
intensive training in laboratory jobs and chimpanzee behaviors. After
several weeks each apprentice becomes more autonomous and has
responsibilities in research and husbandry. The philosophy of CHCI is that
the needs of the chimpanzees come first. Apprentices are trained in humane
care and research techniques.

The program fee is $1800 and there is a non-refundable $25 application
processing fee. The costs do not include housing and transportation.
Inexpensive housing is available on campus. A course in ASL is highly
recommended but not required. For more information on the program and the
application please see our web page at
http://www.cwu.edu/~cwuchci/apprentice.html or contact Dr. Mary Lee
Jensvold, CHCI, CWU, Ellensburg, WA 98926 jensvold at cwu.edu.

The deadline to apply is March 26, 2008.
