Subject: Field assistant needed (Message post request)
Field assistants needed for a behavioural ecology summer research project.
I am looking for hard-working and motivated undergraduate or graduate
students interested in obtaining field experience in behavioural ecology.
The aim of the project is to analyze the effects of brood size on
broodmate aggression in cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis).
Experience is not mandatory; however applications from candidates with
previous field experience in behaviour projects are preferred. The field
season will take place from beginning of May until beginning of August.
Assistants will aid in behavioural data collection, marking and measuring
chicks and assist in all aspects of research as well as general chores
such as cleaning and cooking. The study will take place at the CICOLMA
research station in Veracruz, Mexico, which has comfortable housing
facilities including running water, electricity, and a furnished kitchen.
Travel from Mexico City to Veracruz as well as room and board will be
included, however we are unable to cover the expenses of travel to Mexico
City.
Please contact Alejandro Gonzalez for further information.

Subject: New book: Play Behavior by Burghardt
New book on play in animals.
MIT Press has just released The Genesis of Animal Play: Testing the Limits
by former ABS President Gordon M. Burghardt. Information on the book is
available at the MIT website. It provides not only a review of play
research including mechanisms, function, ontogeny, and evolution, but
develops a new definition of play, an integrative conceptual framework,
and reviews the phylogeny of play with lengthy chapters on play in fish,
reptiles, and invertebrates as well as the usual suspects.

It is also available at Amazon.com. Orders on Amazon made through the ABS
web site earn funds for ABS programs.

Subject: HHMI-funded postdoctoral teaching position at Trinity
University
I would like to encourage ABS members to consider applying for one of our
postdoc teaching positions at Trinity University in San Antonio (see below
the text of our ad which will appear in Science on March 11). Trinity is a
primarily undergraduate institution with a strong tradition of research as
well as teaching. The teaching duties of the postdoc consist of two
sections of our introductory biology lab and assistance in our HHMI-funded
curricular development activities. There will be opportunity for
independent research along with potential collaborations with Biology
faculty. Of particular interest to ABS members may be David Ribble's work
on monogamy in small mammals and my own (Denise Pope's) work on signaling
behavior in arthropods, including fiddler crabs and field crickets.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions about
the position, and see our website given below.
Two TEACHING POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS lasting 2 years each are available to
assist in the development and implementation of an interdisciplinary
introductory curriculum in biology, a project funded by the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute. Postdoctoral fellows will work with faculty from
biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics to infuse interdisciplinary
perspectives across the introductory courses in these fields. In
addition, these fellows will be encouraged to initiate research
collaborations with Trinity faculty, working toward establishing their own
independent research program. Ideally, we seek to hire one person whose
expertise lies in cellular and molecular biology and another whose
expertise lies in ecological and/or evolutionary biology. Applicants
should send curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching interests, a
statement of research interests, and arrange for three letters of
reference to be sent to: Dr. David Ribble, Chair, Department of Biology,
Trinity University, One Trinity Place, San Antonio, TX 78212. Review of
applications will begin 15 April 2005. For further information, please see
our website at: www.trinity.edu/org/hhmi. Women and minority candidates
are strongly encouraged to apply. Trinity University is an Equal
Opportunity Employer.
