Subject: Field Assistant Needed
A volunteer intern is needed to assist in the collection of vocalizations,
hair samples, and fecal samples from Belding ground squirrels in Yosemite
National Park for a project testing the use of bioacoustics as a tool for
tracking wildlife population dynamics and genetic diversity and for a
second project on the effect of ground squirrel populations on
pathogen-related water quality in the Park. This project is run through
the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The
field season will span from June 15-August 15, 2004, approximately. Board
in rustic cabins equipped with cots, electricity, refrigerator, and a wood
stove will be provided. Travel expenses, food, kitchenware, bedding and
hiking gear will be the responsibility of the intern. Fieldwork can be up
to 10 hours per day and 6 days per week. Previous experience with trapping
and marking wildlife is preferred, as is a strong background in
evolutionary biology. In addition, all applicants must have previous
experience with camping and hiking, and must possess a car for the entire
field season. To apply for this internship, please email a curriculum
vitae or resume, including contact information for two references, to
Stacie Hooper at slhooper at ucdavis.edu.
