Subject: Calgary Gorilla Workshop
The Calgary Zoo is excited to announce that we are planning to host a
gorilla workshop in the summer of 2004! With the opening of our new
"Destination Africa" pavilion and it's huge new living quarters for our
troop of 9 gorillas, we thought it only appropriate to host a workshop to
celebrate!
Plans are starting to come together and we have a website set up for those
interested in more details and for registration information. We have also
set up a travel fund that we encourage everyone to contribute to. This
fund will be awarded to keepers that might not otherwise be able to
attend. Please go to our website and check back regularly for updates.
The website address is:
http://2004gorillaworkshop.tripod.com
We are planning the workshop starting Friday June 25, 2004 with
registration and icebreakers through until Monday June 28th at the
Glenmore Inn and Convention Centre. There will be round-table forums,
guest speakers and plenty of time for keepers to exchange ideas and
husbandry experience. (Please bring a favorite gorilla treat recipe, your
enrichment ideas and any photos or video that demonstrates these...)
We are also planning to have pre and post conference trips planned for you
to enjoy the beauty of Alberta's mountains and prairies. There will be
zoo tours of our new facility and we are also planning the event close
enough that you can take in the world renowned Calgary Stampede at the
beginning of July.
We are also wanting to solicit papers from the gorilla community as we
plan to have various topics discussed such as but certainly not limited
to, general gorilla husbandry and the need for bachelor groups,
environmental and behavioural enrichment and training, veterinary and
dietary concerns, conservation, education and the ever increasing concern
about the bushmeat crisis. Not only will this workshop be for those who
work directly with gorillas but we would also like to gear it to students,
researchers, docents and other gorilla enthusiasts. Please submit
presentation titles with a brief synopsis quickly as deadlines are
looming!
We look forward to seeing you in Calgary, Alberta Canada next summer!

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA
5-7 MARCH 2004
FREE REGISTRATION AND ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
REGISTRATION AND ABSTRACT SUBMITTAL DEADLINE: 31 JANUARY 2004
We invite all undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral researchers in
ecology, evolution, environmental sciences, limnology, forestry,
fisheries, wildlife, marine sciences, and other related fields to submit
abstracts for either oral or poster presentations at the 1st Annual
Southeastern Ecology and Evolution Conference (SEEC) to be held March 5-7,
2004, at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. SEEC is
a product of similar conferences currently held in the northeast (NEEC)
and the midwest (MEEC). These conferences are professional meetings
intended for students in the environmental sciences to present their
research to their colleagues in a comfortable, fun, and low stress
environment. Such events are designed to encourage new friendships within
our field and to share newly developed research ideas for feedback.
While we expect most SEEC participants to be from the Southeast, we
encourage and welcome all interested individuals to submit abstracts
and/or attend.

We are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker is Dr. Mark E. Hay,
Teasley Professor of Environmental Sciences at the Georgia Institute of
Technology. Dr. Hay is one of the foremost marine community ecologists of
our time, and since 1999, he has been instrumental in the development of
the new Center of Aquatic Chemical Ecology at the Georgia Institute of
Technology.
The Georgia Institute of Technology is located in midtown Atlanta, Georgia
and is convenient to numerous hotels, restaurants, music venues, and bars

OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE TRAINING
University at Buffalo, SUNY
Openings are available in the University at Buffalo Neural and Cognitive
Plasticity Laboratory for highly motivated undergraduate and graduate
students interested in comparative cognition and behavior, auditory
perception and neuroethology, and animal biacoustics.
(Lab website: www.buffalo.edu/~emiii)
Graduate student positions are part of an NIMH- and NSF-supported research
program employing operant, neurophysiological, and computational techniques
to investigate the mechanism of learning and auditory perception in rodents,
whales, dolphins, and humans. Applicants should have a strong interest in
animal cognition, behavioral neuroscience, or bioacoustics. Prior
experience with use of operant techniques and computer programming would be
beneficial.
Subject to the availability of funds, positions can begin as early as

research facilities began to operate in the fall of 2003, with extensive
lab space and room to house rodents and birds. The PhD program emphasizes
general experimental topics, with emphasis on comparative learning,
behavioral neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and social psychology. The
Psychology Department coordinates the undergraduate programs in psychology
and neuroscience.
