Subject: Nat'l Geographic looking for help with Ibex behavior description
[Editor's note: two jpegs came with this message: if you think you can
help and would like to see them, please contact me, Jim Ha
(jcha at u.washington.edu), and I will attach them back to you]
Dear Dr. Ha,
I received the following inquiry (I hope the photos forward well enough to open). I was
able to provide information about the male lion investigating the female; however, I was
uncertain about "Ibex tasting the air." It appears to be a Flehmen response; however, I
am not familiar with ibex behavior. If you know someone on the list who studies this
animal, kindly forward to that individual and request a direct reply to
jsteinbe at ngs.org. If you do not, please post an edited version of this inqiry in the
ABS net Electronic Newsletter.
Thank you, in advance, for your help.

Dear Drs. Hart and Wysocki:
John Vandenbergh gave me your names. I'm writing photo legends for an article in
National Geographic about sexual selection and have two photographs showing
animals using scent to determine sexual status. I'd like to get a little more
information about what's going on in each of the images (including whether in
these two cases the females have any "say" in the matter, which is part of what
our article covers). Perhaps one or both of you can assist? The photos in
question are attached:
(See attached file: Sexual Selection_10.jpg) Ibex "tasting" the air
(See attached file: Sexual Selection_2.jpg)male lion sniffing female
I assume in both cases the females emit pheromones that are picked up by the
vomeronasal organs of the males. Can you give me any further details about the
behaviors in the photos? I need to write a separate (and different) caption for
each, so if you have specific info about one animal or the other, great.
I'd appreciate any input. And if you know anyone who studies the ibex in
particular, please let me know.
Thanks very much.
Sincerely,
Jenny Steinberg

Subject: Experienced field assistant looking for position
Hi. My name is Chris Mueller. I am 50 years old and have worked a wide
variety of jobs from computer programming to tree planting. Last summer I
spent 700 hours in S.W. Arizona doing field research on lizards. I was
thrilled to get this opportunity and am looking for a similar situation.
Money is not a big issue, the right situation is. Animal observation and
behavior have been a lifelong passion for me. I am cabable of, enjoy and
have a variety of experience in construction, maintainance, problem solving,
fabrication, etc. My job history and additional references available upon
reqest.

RESEARCH GRANT AWARD CONTRIBUTORS
The Animal Behavior Society and the Development Committee in particular
would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Society who
contributed to our 2000 request for contributions to our Research Grant
Awards fund and made it possible for 22 awards to be made this year from a
total of 105 applications. The ABS Research Grants provide needed financial
assistance to our graduate student members. These modest awards can be used
to fund a small project, to provide seed money while seeking long-range
financing, or as supplemental funding for a large project. On occasion they
have been the key that unlocks the research career of a talented animal
behaviorist.
Some of the contributions to the fund were modest, some were extremely
generous, but all were sincerely appreciated. The award recipients, the
Society, and the Development Committee express our gratitude to the
following members for their contributions to the 2000 Awards fund:

Subject: Event Recorder search
I'm looking for an Event Recorder program that is functionally similar to
Patrick Lorch's Event Recorder (runs on PocketC for Palm OS). I need one
that will run on a Pocket PC - Windows OS and not Palm OS. The program
must be able to calculate durations of different events. Does anyone know
of a Pocket PC or Windows OS compatible version?
