and a keen interest in theoretical issues in evolutionary biology. The
position is initially for two or three years and can be prolonged.

The successful candidate will join a research group focussing on
evolutionary mechanisms of advance d sociality and alternative
reproductive behaviours. Other research fields in the ecologically
oriented Institute of Zoology include Conservation Biology (Raphael
Arlettaz), Evolutionary Ecology (Heinz Richner), Population Genetics

Subject: IJCP: Special Issue on Applied Research

The International Journal of Comparative Psychology is planning to
dedicate one of its quarterly editions to reports emphasizing the
application value of experimental findings in animal learning and
behavior. The use of traditional comparative psychology methodology in an
applied setting is becoming more common and with the increasing
prominence, comparative psychology has begun to touch our lives in a
multiplicity of unexpected ways. This special collection of research
reports is intended to highlight the diversity of domains to which
comparative psychology has been applied. It is a wonderful opportunity to
celebrate the true value of research in animal learning and behavior.

The Applied Edition will include (but not be limited to) articles describin=
g:

* ways in which training procedures developed with laboratory animals have
been applied to practical problems with both human and nonhuman animals
(e.g., modifying behavior of disabled children, eliciting behavioral
cooperation from large zoo animals)

* unique uses of comparative methodology

* enrichment of lives (both human and other animals) through the findings
of comparative psychology (e.g., entertainment, safety, welfare)

If you are currently utilizing techniques or principles derived from basic
research in animal learning and behavior in an applied setting, I would
like to invite you to submit a manuscript describing your work. As Special
Editor of the International Journal of Comparative Psychology: Applied
Edition, I would like to receive all submissions for review by August 1,
2002. If you are interested in participating, please notify me before May
1, 2002. Please feel free to suggest other researchers who have developed
applied uses for comparative psychology methodology.

Thanks for your consideration,

Subject: New Opps- NSF's UMEB Program - Prof. Soc. Travel awards for
           Minority Undergrads

NSF's Undergraduate Mentoring in Environmental Biology (UMEB), a program
that seeks to provide research opportunities for students from groups
underrepresented in science, now offers three types of grants. In
addition to Research-Mentoring grants of up to $500,000 total for 5 years,
the expanded UMEB Program can now support Planning Activities aimed at
strengthening partnerships between institutions that plan to submit a
Research-Mentoring proposal. Travel grants can also be made that enable
professional societies to enrich their meetings with undergraduate
students from underrepresented groups.

The expanded UMEB Program is described in a new program solicitation (NSF
02-066). The solicitation and other information about UMEB, including
abstracts of current awards, are available on the Web at
