Subject: Event Recorder for Palm???
Hello:
Jenny Boughman asked earlier about Event Recording Software for the
Palm Pilot. If anyone DOES know of any such program, would you please
give details to the ABSNET list as well as to Jenny? I too would very
much appreciate having an event recording program for the Palm.
Previously (around 5-6 months ago) I went on a search to the various
Palm User Groups I knew of and tried to find just such a program.
Unfortunately, no one either a) had such a program, b) did not know of
such a program, or c) did not understand what I was looking for (I had a
difficult time I think, trying to describe what this program would
do.... usually it would end up being more of a conversation about animal
behavior in general and less about the palm).
Thanks!
Gary

Dear Editors,
I am refering to Jenny Boughmans question concerning an event recorder for
a 'palm pilot'. Although, I already replied to her personally this link
may be of common interest:
http://www.phenotyping.de/Outdoorexplorer.html
The Outdoor Explorer was originaly designed for a friend of mine who is
observing wild guinea pigs in south america. Therefore the focus is lying
on outdoor practicability. A demo version can be requested at my homepage.
I was using a less sophisticated version for my own lab research: A simple
event recorder that alowed me to enter letters as states/events for short
test sessions (Elevated Plus Maze) To analyse the data I was using a
simple MSExcel macro that did well for summary statistics. I will add this
package to my homepage within the next days.
Best regards,
Lars

Multidisciplinary Graduate Student Research Training in Environmental
Biology: Integrating Ecology, Evolution, Geosciences and Sustainable
Natural Resource Management
Department of Education GAANN Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Graduate student fellowships are available to develop expertise in
basic environmental biology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The focus of this program is to understand the dynamics and
complexity of natural systems through the multidisciplinary efforts
of individuals working at different disciplinary interfaces. Our
graduate-training program seeks highly motivated students looking for
creative challenges in uncharted areas, and a willingness to engage
others from different disciplines to search for common ground and new
directions. Developing exceptional teaching capabilities is
considered an important part of this training.
A small number of fellowships are available for Fall, 2001 and
Spring, 2002. Five fellowships will be available for Fall, 2002.
Program Core Areas
* Basic and Applied Ecology
* Evolutionary Analysis
* Conservation Biology and Sustainable Natural Resource Management
* Behavioral Ecology
* Geosciences, with an emphasis on paleoclimatology and
geology/recent ecology interactions
Key Elements of the Program
* Nationally recognized research programs and accessible faculty
* $18,000 fellowship plus tuition, health insurance and book stipend
* Funds for student graduate research and travel
* Core graduate courses and problem solving workshops
* Mentored teaching and teaching practicums

From: Jeff Lucas, American editor of Animal Behaviour
Subject: *** Important announcement re: AB reference citation style ***
As a result of further discussion between the editors and Academic Press,
it has been decided to abandon the recently announced change to the style
of reference citations in the journal. We have taken this decision for two
reasons. First, while many journals have adopted styles similar to the
proposed numerical citations, it is clear that there is a strong desire
among contributing authors and the readership of Animal Behaviour to
retain the current tradition of names and dates. Second, evolving
production procedures relating to the electronic journal now look likely
to make the changes redundant within the foreseeable future, so that
production efficiency considerations have significantly relaxed. The
Instructions to Authors will therefore be amended forthwith and all
manuscripts submitted in the numerical citation style will be edited
accordingly by Animal Behaviour. Authors of manuscripts using the
numerical citation format will not be required to reformat their own
manuscripts. We have decided to act promptly in this matter to ensure
continuity of the current style in the journal. We feel certain that
authors and readers will understand the reasons behind these recent
decisions and approve of the final outcome.

Subject: Back issues of AB for donation
I am interested in getting the following message out to ABS members,
especially to those libraries that might be in need of back issues of Animal
Behaviour.
Donation of back issues: I would like to donate a sizeable run of back
issues of Animal Behaviour: Volumes 29 - 45, 1979 - 1992. These issues are
in reasonable shape, and are continuous (no missing volumes or issues).
Preference given to needy libraries, but individuals may apply. Available
for the cost of shipping. Contact Peter Frederick: pcf at gnv.ifas.ufl.edu
