Teaching Positions for Natural Scientists and Biologists in Harvard College Writing Program

Harvard University's Writing Program is recruiting natural scientists and biologists for full- and part-time positions to teach introductory academic writing courses based in their fields.

Each year the Harvard College Writing Program at Harvard University hires several preceptors (Harvard's title for this non-ladder faculty position) from a variety of disciplines, including the natural sciences and biology. The position has typically been seen as a desirable kind of post-doc for a year or two before our faculty move on to tenure-track jobs in their fields.

Each faculty member develops a writing course on an academic topic, usually grounded in his or her field or in an interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing argument, analysis and close work with source material. Each faculty member teaches two sections per semester of fifteen freshmen per section. Salary and benefits are competitive. Contracts are for one year, renewable for five years. Preference is given to candidates with Ph.D.s in academic disciplines that are taught at Harvard College; who have college teaching experience; and who demonstrate a lively interest in teaching undergraduates to become skilled academic writers.

As the Program continues to diversify its course offerings beyond the humanities, the hiring committee is particularly keen on recruiting faculty in the sciences and social sciences to join the Program's growing number of colleagues in those fields (we now have a physical anthropologist, psychologist, sociologist, and several cultural anthropologists on the faculty). The Program offers extensive teaching support for new faculty as they develop their courses and strategies for teaching freshmen the fundamentals of academic analytical writing.

For the page devoted to applying to teach to our Program (applications are due November 5, 2009), please go here.

Harvard University is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. The University and Program have a strong commitment to diversity among faculty and staff, and we encourage applications from under-represented groups.
