from the nifty-gadgets dept. I am looking for a field assistant/intern to participate in a study on the foraging psychology of nectarivorous bats and the coevolution between bats and the plants they pollinate in Costa Rica. Assistant duties will include mist-netting, and setting-up and maintaining computerized bat nectar-feeder systems. Work should begin in late August or early September and ideally should continue until early to mid-December 2009. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. I offer the best working hours among all bat researchers, since for the most part the computer set-up does the work for us. Working days (7 per week) are not too long, but the work at the beginning of the project can sometimes be physically demanding. Interns should tolerate tropical heat and humidity well. Expect to encounter venomous snakes and blood-sucking insects. You should have an up-to-date anti-rabiesshot, because vampire bats are quite common in the area and are frequently caught when mist-netting. The most important skills a field assistant who wants to work with me should have are high motivation, a knack for technology, being a quick learner, getting along well with people, and being comfortable with working alone in the forest at night. Previous experience with bats or field work in the tropics is desirable but not required. The field site of this study is the OTS La Selva Biological Station, a lowland Caribbean rain forest in Costa Rica. It is a well-developedinternational tropical research station with good infrastructure. An assistant must pay for the round-trip airfare to Costa Rica (inlandtransportation will be provided) as well as for station fees, which include housing, food and laboratory use. Assistants must also covertheir own health insurance and personal expenses. Long-term station fees are $29.75 per day. A significant amount of these (up to 70%) will be covered for assistants who can stay for the whole duration of the project (see above)! For your application, please send me a cover letter detailing your interests, experiences and abilities, a short CV, and the names and contact information of two references (ideally someone who has experienced you working in a research or field context) to vladislav.nachev@uni-bielefeld.de. < Bio undergrad looking for sum 09' field work opportunity asap | New Fox Researcher Website >
