Field Assistant - Kluane Red Squirrel Project

Graduate student looking for a field assistant to help collect data on pilfering behaviour in red squirrels in Kluane YT CANADA. Position is from August to October 2008. Work involves live-trapping, behavioural observations, radio telemetry and vegetation work. Undergraduates and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

The Kluane Red Squirrel Project is an interdisciplinary, large-scale field experiment designed to test the importance of food abundance to the ecology and evolution of red squirrels. The project is based in the Kluane region of Yukon, Canada, where red squirrels have been studied extensively since 1987. The work involves live trapping red squirrels, doing behavioural observations, radio telemetry, territory mapping, climbing trees to find young in the nest, and vegetation work. The qualified applicant will assist in data collection for a Master’s thesis as well as contribute to data collection for the long term project. Position is from August to October 2008. Applicant must be willing to work in cold temperatures and in a remote location. Food and shelter will be provided, but applicant is responsible for all personal equipment (sleeping bag, boots, appropriate field clothing etc.). Applicant must be hard working and dependable.

Salary: $1800+ per month (depending on experience)

Required Qualifications:

  1. Must be eligible to work in Canada
  2. Must have a valid driver’s licence
  3. Must have up to date first aid training
  4. Capable of hiking up to 15 KM per day
  5. Capable of handling Peanut butter (no nut allergy)

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Degree or relevant experience in the field of ecology, zoology, wildlife biology etc.
  2. Experience handling small mammals
  3. Familiar with Excel and Access
  4. Experience with radio telemetry
