Madagascar Field Research Assistantship -- Cornell University
Research Opportunities Posted by Erik R Patel on 2005 December 17 (Saturday) : 07:21 AM
from the dept.
1 to 2 Field Research Assistantships are available from March 1 through June 25 2006.Participants will aid in on-going research in north-eastern Madagascar on the critically endangered silky sifaka (Propithecus candidus), one of the Top 25 rarest primates in the world out of over 620 total primate taxa.

We will be collaborating with a geneticist/veternarian and together will search for silky sifakas outside of their only 2 protected areas (Marojejy National Park and Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve). Our ultimate goal is to determine the approximate extent and condition of individuals living outside the protected areas with the hope of creating new protected areas.

The animals will be darted and sedated for a short time before being returned to the forest. During this time, your job will be to assist with recording several cranial measurements and scent-gland measurements in addition to collecting other basic data such as the group size and composition.

Your job will also be to assist with various conservation education activities in each of the areas we visit such as posting of information signs, passing out coloring books to children etc...

Time permitting, we will conduct surveys/interviews with local villagers about their attitudes towards the silky sifakas and the protected areas.

Diet will be basic, mainly rice and beans. The days will be long and filled with hiking and it will rain A LOT. You will be sleeping in a tent and there will be some small harmless leeches that will suck your blood while you are in the forest. You will likely get an upset stomach or flu at least once while you are there.

Qualifications:

At a minimum, Bachelors Degree (Biology, Anthropology, or Psychology) and 22 years of age with at least some coursework in animal biology/animal behavior AND at least some experience working (or at least traveling) in a developing country. Some French is a plus.

A sincere desire to pursue graduate work (PhD) in primatology or a related discipline is a plus. ABOVE AVERAGE physical condition. ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDANTLY AND GET ALONG WITH OTHER PEOPLE IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT.

Salary/funding:

You must pay for your own plane ticket to Madagascar and purchase your own camping/living supplies. I will cover your in-country expenses (Food,Transportation) EXCEPT for hotel stays when not at the field site.
