Developing Nations Research Grant Competition 2004-2005

Guidelines for the 2004-2005 Competition

The Animal Behavior Society announces the seventh annual Developing Nations Research Grant Competition. The funds are intended to provide financial support for scientific studies of animal behavior conducted by current members of the Animal Behavior Society (ABS). Applications are invited from student members as well as more established members of the research community. Only members of the Animal Behavior Society who are residents of a developing nation and are conducting research at an institution in a developing nation are eligible to apply (please note that student members of ABS are also eligible to apply for the annual Student Research Grants Competition). The following nations shall not be considered as developing nations: the United States, Canada, Israel, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. Grants are awarded for research to be conducted within a 1-year period from the date of award.

The maximum award is US $700. Two awards will be made in 2005. All applicants, whether successful or not, will receive reviewers' comments on their application. We hope that these comments will help in the preparation of future research proposals.

The DEADLINE for receipt of completed applications is 12 January 2005 . Please allow at least 14 days for international mail to reach the U.S. All applications must be submitted in English. No late applications will be accepted. Applications will be reviewed by two or three referees and judged on the basis of conceptual significance, intellectual merit, originality and feasability as appropriate for the career stage of the applicant. Results will be announced by 1 April 2005. The successful applicant will be congratulated in the following ABS newsletter.
